Assistant Director: Perfusion
Tarryn Oschadleus underwent practical training in Perfusion in the department in 2000-2001 where she studied through the (then) ML Sultan Technikon in Durban and graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Cardiovascular Perfusion. In 2010 she was appointed as the Assistant Director of Perfusion, overseeing the service at both Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospitals. Tarryn responsible for adult and paediatric cardiopulmonary bypass and is involved in all aspects of overseeing the Perfusion service in an academic institution. She is enthusiastic about the comprehensive teaching and training of Perfusion students in the unit, and invests much of her time in this. She is committed to the department and dedicated to the unified vision of excellence in the care of all patients in cardiac surgery.
Hannes Engelbrecht is responsible for adult and paediatric cardiopulmonary bypass as well as the training and evaluation of students in perfusion and administrative duties at Groote Schuur and Red Cross Memorial Hospital. He also provides a cardiopulmonary service at the UCT research centre.
He studied his Bachelor of Technology: Clinical Technology at the Central University of Technology, Freestate, completing his practical training at the George Mukhari Hospital, Gauteng and worked subsequently at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town. He joined the Chris Barnard Division in 2009.
Nolwazi Nodada trained in the Division from 2011 through the Durban University of Technology and obtained her Bachelor of Technology in Perfusion in 2012, where-after she was appointed in a qualified post. Nolwazi is a member of the open-heart, surgical team. She conducts extracorporeal circulation in adults and paediatrics and ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. She also assists with research in the Cardiovascular Research Unit.
Johan Pretorius completed a Bachelor of Technology: Clinical Technology degree at the Central University of Technology in 2013. He passed cum laude and received the Vice Chancellor’s Prestige Award for an outstanding academic record. He started his practical training at Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein in 2012 and completed it in the Chris Barnard Department of Cardiac Surgery in 2013. He was appointed at Red Cross Children's Hospital in October 2013. He is currently completing his Masters degree through the Central University of Technology. His treatise is entitled “A comparison between Bretschneider Custodial Cardioplegia and St Thomas II Cardioplegia during Cardiac Surgery”.
Junior Student Perfusionist
Bennie Lategan is completing his National Diploma: Clinical Technology at the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein. He started as a student perfusionist at the beginning of 2014. His main responsibility is to assist during cardiopulmonary bypass and related procedures in adults and paediatrics and in so doing, train in Perfusion.
