Assistant Director: Perfusion
Tarryn Oschadleus

Tarryn Oschadleus underwent practical training in Perfusion in the department in 2000-2001 where she studied through the (then) ML Sultan Technikon in Durban and graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Cardiovascular Perfusion. In 2010 she was appointed as the Assistant Director of Perfusion, overseeing the service at both Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospitals. Tarryn responsible for adult and paediatric cardiopulmonary bypass and is involved in all aspects of overseeing the Perfusion service in an academic institution. She is enthusiastic about the comprehensive teaching and training of Perfusion students in the unit, and invests much of her time in this. She is committed to the department and dedicated to the unified vision of excellence in the care of all patients in cardiac surgery.



Chief Perfusionist
Siboniso Shezi

Shezi is the Chief Cardiovascular Perfusionist at Groote Schuur and Red Cross Hospitals with 6 years' experience conducting perfusion services. He qualified with his BTECH Clinical Perfusion degree in 2012 and is currently conducting cardiac perfusion services for The Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.  Responsibilities include supervising and training members of the perfusion team in newer techniques and procedures.
 

 



Senior Perfusionist
​Stefan Pretorius

Stefan Pretorius completed a Bachelor of Technology: Clinical Technology (CUM LAUDE) degree at the Central University of Technology in 2014. He started his practical training at Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein in 2013 as a N.Dip student and completed his B.Tech training in the Chris Barnard Department of Cardiac Surgery in 2014. He was appointed at Red Cross Children's Hospital in August 2014. 
Stefan conducts extracorporeal circulation in adults and paediatrics and ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. He also assists with training of student perfusionists in the department, and with research in the Cardiovascular Research Unit.
 



Junior Perfusionist
Kalynne Knott

Kalynne's life's vision is, and has always been, to help others. Her journey into Clinical Technology is one that has opened her eyes to the vast roles and responsibilities that exist within the medical realm. Throughout her initial passion for medicine to her Honours degree in Pharmacology and now her entry into cardiovascular perfusion, she has cultivated within herself a desire to always be involved in health care. Perfusion is a passion of hers, as an integral role in the setting of cardiothoracic surgery.

 



Senior Student Perfusionist
Odile Nieuwoudt

Odile obtained a Baccalaureus Scientiae degree in Genetics at the University of the Free State in 2014 and completed her National Diploma in Clinical Technology through the Central University of Technology (CUT) in 2017. She is currently doing her Baccalaureus Technologiae: Clinical Technology through CUT and started as a student perfusionist at the beginning of 2017 at Groote Schuur Hospital. Her main responsibility is to assist and thereby train, in performing cardiopulmonary bypass and related procedures in adults at Groote Schuur Hospital and pediatrics at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital.
 



Senior Student Perfusionist
Elliot Gates

Elliot obtained a Baccalaureus Societatis Scientiae degree in Nursing at the University of the Free State in 2013, in 2014 he completed his Community Service year at MUCPP Community Health Centre in Mangaung, Bloemfontein. He then enrolled in 2015, for his National Diploma in Clinical Technology at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein and completed it in 2017. He is currently completing his Baccalaureus Technologiae: Clinical Technology in Perfusion through CUT and started working as a student perfusionist at the beginning of 2017 at Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospitals. His main responsibilities are to assist and perform cardiopulmonary bypass and related cardiac procedures in adults at Groote Schuur Hospital and pediatrics at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital.
 



Junior Student Perfusionist
​Fatima Faruk

Fatima Faruk is currently completing her National Diploma: Clinical Technology at the Durban University of Technology. She started as a student perfusionist at the beginning of 2018. Her main responsibility is to assist, and so train in perfusion, during cardiopulmonary bypass and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation in adults and paediatrics and ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables.
 

 



Junior Student Perfusionist
Ruhan Herbst

Ruhan Herbst is completing his National Diploma:  Clinical Technology at the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein. He started as a student perfusionist at the beginning of 2018 and will finish end of 2019. His main responsibility is to assist during cardiopulmonary bypass and related procedures in adults and paediatrics and in so doing, train in Perfusion.
